Exodus 20:2-3

I am the LORD thy [your] God, which have brought thee [you; the Hebrew people] out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage [slavery]. {3} Thou [you] shalt have no other gods before [other than] me.
King James Version
_________________________________________

When God told His people to worship and believe in Him, that wasn’t so hard for them — He was just one more god to add to the list.  When God then told the people to have no other gods, that was difficult for them to accept; but if they didn’t learn that the God Who led them out of Egypt was the only true God, they could not be His people, no matter how faithfully they kept the other nine commandments.  Money, work, or pleasure can become gods when you concentrate too much on them for meaning and security.  Letting God hold the central place in your life keeps things from turning into gods.
